But growth has been slowing down for several decades now, and demographers from all over the world expect the world's population to shrink by the middle of this century.
What are the consequences of population decline for the claim to keep growing? Will this be possible at all? Or do we have to and can we think differently about urban development?
In “Smaller Cities in a Shrinking World”, urban policy expert Alan Mallach seeks to understand how population decline, growth stagnation and climate change will affect cities around the world in the coming decades. What does a world of shrinking cities mean? Do we expect dilapidated façades and run-down slums, or is there also an opportunity in shrinking?

Sei es bezogen auf Bevölkerungswachstum, Bauvorhaben, oder auf alle möglichen Arten von Gütern. Doch das Wachstum verlangsamt sich bereits seit einigen Jahrzehnten, und Demografen aus aller Welt gehen davon aus, dass die Weltbevölkerung noch Mitte dieses Jahrhunderts schrumpfen wird.
Welche Konsequenzen hat der Bevölkerungsrückgang für den Anspruch, immer weiter zu wachsen? Wird das überhaupt möglich sein? Oder müssen und können wir Stadtentwicklung anders denken?
“In Smaller Cities in a Shrinking World” versucht der Experte für Stadtpolitik Alan Mallach zu verstehen, wie sich Bevölkerungsrückgang, Wachstumsstagnation und Klimawandel in den kommenden Jahrzehnten auf Städte in aller Welt auswirken werden.
